There are different types of game you can play.
Ranked games
Ranked games are those that are added to your site ranking. If you play one of these games all House Rules count.
Ranked games result in scores being added or subtracted from your personal rating. Visit the site forum to find out how your rating works.

No Rank games
These games do not award points. They are useful for trying out different variants, or just for playing for fun.

Friends games & Short-handed Games
These games are also No Rank.
The difference is that in these games you can specify a password that will remain in place for the duration of the game (in the above game types the password only prevents people who do not have it to enter the game). This means that, should one player surrender, only a new player who has the password can join. They are designed to be something like playing a game of Diplomacy as if you were sat around a board.
In these games, some House Rules are relaxed.
Short-handed Games can be played by less than seven players, so if you don't have seven friends waiting eagerly to play, you can play with less. They match the published rules for this type of game. They can be set up as FRIENDS games and now as NO RANK games.

Schools games
These games are also No Rank.
These are similar to Friends games in many aspects. The main difference is that they have an extra, non-playing slot for the "Teacher" (the person who creates the game. The Teacher has access to the whole of the game but cannot enter any orders. It is a great way to monitor play, give advice, etc and a great aid to the many teachers who use the site to support their teaching. It is also used by Mentors to help new players acclimatise to the site.

Live Games (PREMIUM ONLY)
These are designed to be played over a short period of time. The length of the game can be set, and the game can also be set up to continue after the LIVE period finishes.
DIAS (Draws Include All Survivors)
If your game doesn't look like it is going to end in a SOLO VICTORY (one power controlling 18+ supply centres) you can propose a draw. Some games can be set up as DIAS games. In these, every player that has survived shares in the draw.
In other games in which this option has not been selected, players can nominate which other powers they want to share the draw with.
NB: RULES FOR PROPOSING A DRAW
Draws cannot be proposed before 1905.
ALL players who survive in the game MUST agree to the draw, whether or not they are included in it. Not accepting the draw will prevent it from being successful.
